The Pop Group, who formed in Bristol in 1977, drew from an eclectic range of influences including free-form jazz, funk and bass culture and carved out a significant and influential niche for themselves.
"Punk was already happening, so we decided to mix in loads of other stuff that we were hearing on the streets of Bristol like dub reggae, funk, experimental noise and stuff we were all into, and our wave was called 'post-punk'.
But for me, it's a bit of a stupid idea having a genre, because we've always been against genres." - Mark Stewart
The band split in 1980 after three albums but reformed in 2010 at the request of The Simpson's Matt Groening to play the All Tomorrow's Parties festival.
The Pop Group are set to play a show at the Kings Arms, Auckland, on the 4th of March.
For Music 101, Trevor Reekie caught up with founding member and vocalist Mark Stewart.
