2:10 The Mary Ann Muller Story - 120 years ago, New Zealand became the first country in the world to give women the vote. While Kate Sheppard is usually the first name that comes to mind in the New Zealand women's suffrage movement, there is a less welll known Nelson woman who was also a pioneer for women's rights.
Mary Ann Muller wrote articles for Nelson's influential Examiner Newspaper under a pseudonym, because her husband did not approve, 30 years before Kate Sheppard Started the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Mary Gavin is a great fan of Mary Ann Muller, and is on the Board of the National Council for Women.
2:20 Over 50's Kapa Haka - Kura Simon - The hair is a little grayer, the joints not as nimble as they once were, but the passion runs deep for the members of the Teh Taikura O Taya Toopua kahpa hahka group. Most of the members are over the age of 50 - a few are in their 80's. The Wanganui based group gets together once a week to practice. They are in demand for performances at community events. Morvin and Kura Simon started the group a few years ago and it keeps going strong. The Simons were named in the Queens Birthday honors for their work with Kapa Haka groups over the past 50 years.
Next Tuesday Morvin will be given their honors at Government House. Morvin gets the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) and Kura, a Queen's Service Medal.
