Vege prices up 30 percent

You've probably noticed that vegetables are pretty pricey at the moment, particularly things like lettuce which are about 5 dollars a head!

They were around 2 dollars a head last year.

Statistics New Zealand says they've gone up more than 30 percent in the past year.

The president of the produce industry body, United Fresh, Jerry Prendergast says lettuce, tomato, broccoli, kumara and potatoes were at record high prices last month.

He says while it should be noted that lettuces are out of season in winter, the recent cyclones are to blame for a shorter supply than usual, and Autumn was also a lot wetter than usual.
