Talented Christchurch songwriter Sarena Close takes her performance name 'Mousey' from a David Bowie lyric.
She and her band play tracks from the new record My Friends in our Christchurch studio.
Mousey tells Jesse Mulligan she's excited to perform with Julia Deans and her band Fur Patrol at two upcoming shows (Nelson on 11 August and Christchurch on 13 August).
"Julia is awesome. She's a big supporter of other female artists and she's supported me a lot so I'm stoked to be able to open for her."
At a time when Mousey was questioning whether she should release music at all, Julia visited her in Christchurch and remained supportive.
"She spent a lot of time messaging me and trying to build up my confidence and was just really lovely."
My Friends - a follow-up to Mousey's 2019's Silver Scroll-nominated Lemon Law - is the product of a year spent focused on friends and relationships, Mousey says.
The song 'One Dollar Wednesdays' is a tribute to her husband and bandmate Chris.
"I feel like all my songs are pretty straightforward. If you just listen to the lyrics it's all you need to know. It's all there."
Mousey played:
'One Dollar Wednesdays'
'Rachel'
'Pudding and Pie'
'My Hands Are Made Of Glass'
