A cyber attack on a primary health organisation that exposed the personal data of up to a million people is being described as a wake-up call for authorities.

It was revealed at the weekend that medical data of up to a million people in the lower North Island region could be in criminal hands because of the hacking of Tua Ora Compass Health's website.

The organisation says it's devastated it wasn't able to keep personal information safe.
