Chips, popcorn may be banned from early childhood centres

Saveloys, marshmallows and whole grapes are among foods the Health Ministry says are too dangerous to serve under-fives in early childhood centres.

Draft guidelines say such foods pose a high risk of choking small children and centres should not serve them.

Now the Education Ministry is considering making that advice mandatory to minimise the risk of tragic accidents.

RNZ education correspondent, John Gerritsen and videographer Dom Thomas went to a Wellington centre to find out what impact a ban would have.
