Hipkins on MIQ security guard who misled over being tested

From Checkpoint, 5:10 pm on 14 April 2021

An MIQ security guard infected with Covid-19 at the Grand Millennium allegedly lied about having his regular compulsory tests for the virus.

By law, staff in isolation hotels have to be tested every fortnight, in quarantine hotels it is once a week.

The guard known as Case B tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday 8 April. But computer records show he had not had a mandatory fortnightly test for more than five months.

At a heated select committee hearing it was also revealed only about 50 percent of MIQ employers are actually entering staff test information into the government database.

And officials were unable say how many other workers have missed vital tests. The government is now making it compulsory to use the testing register from the 27 April, and Covid-19 testing will be ramped up to once a week for all MIQ workers.

Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins talks through the changes with Lisa Owen.
