Northland Chamber of Commerce chief executive Steve Smith says the decision to keep the region in red level limits is not what he was expecting, "and certainly not what we were hoping for".
"Any form of restriction at this time of the year really impacts our sole season, insofar as hospitality and tourism go."
He said like other Northlanders he was not keen to get the vaccine, but did for the good of others, especially those who can't be vaccinated.
"So just to continue with restrictions on that basis for me is a bitter pill to swallow."
