Australia has long provided security to the Solomons. It's worried about the deal between the two country's and China's dominance in the region.
Massey University Defence and Security senior lecturer Dr Anna Powles has told Checkpoint New Zealand does need to be worried about the leaked security deal between China and the Solomon Islands.
The deal has been confirmed as a draft, by Solomon Islands' Office of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
"If the agreement ... certainly in its current form, it's deeply concerning. It has the potential to degrade and disrupt security in the region."
Powles said what is also really significant is that it suggests China is seeking logistical supply capabilities and material assets in the Solomon Islands to support naval ships. And that could morph into a Chinese military base in the nation.
