Benthem Farms in northern Michigan farms 2500 cows. They're milked three times a day and housed year round.
Nearly all of the 1600 ha farm is used to grow feed for the cows. It's cut, stored and delivered to the large holsteins in their barns.
Bruce Benthem says this year has been the best growing season in his 40 years of farming.
Twelve hundred hectares of corn was grown and he says yields have been 'phenomenal'.
The growing season can be short. Snow sits on the ground for four months of the year and in winter temperatures can plummet to -28 degrees C.
