First popularised by British musician Brian Eno in the 1970s, ambient music is a genre of music emphasising tone and atmosphere over traditional melodies, rhythm and structure.

Pōneke ambient musician George Johnston has described his work as ‘aural ketamine’, driven by a belief in the healing properties of music.

George’s fourth album, Music for Grieving, was inspired by seeing the impact creating space for people to deeply reflect can have - while also facing unresolved grief of his own.

Formerly known as Mantle, George’s past ‘sonic architectural’ albums have been accompanied by guided mindful listening sessions. He’s also worked for many years teaching mindfulness in schools with organisation Pause Breathe Smile, and continues to work with Coliberate doing ‘mental health first aid sessions’ across Aotearoa.
