Karin Bettley is a ceramic artist living in the Waikato coastal town of Raglan.
Renowned for its surf beaches and the longest left-hand break in the world, the seaside spot also has a thriving food and arts scene.
Karin Bettley’s love of the natural world informs her practice and sculptural work.
“Working with clay feels right for me,” she says, “as there is a lovely relationship between function, form, science, and expression”.
RAW, a Creative Raglan event organised by the Raglan Community Arts Council, took place over Labour weekend. The series has been celebrating the local emerging artistic community - from taxidermists to jewellers - for 13 years.
Karin Bettley tells Maggie Tweedie about how her love for poetry, singing and midwifery lead her to explore creative life in the town - and how that life swells in the summer.
