Each week, Culture 101 puts the spotlight on a different part of Aotearoa and this week, we’re on the island of Waiheke.
Fiona Blanchard is the Director of Te Whare Taonga O Waiheke/Waiheke Community Gallery - a rare Island treasure which showcases a wide range of local ceramicists, sculptors, jewellers, painters and photographers.
2025 will mark 30 years of the gallery which also runs The Waiheke Art Map, Artists in Residence Programme and the famous Sculpture on the Gulf event.
She tells Culture 101 about the logistics of getting art to and from the Island, Waiheke’s bustling ceramic community and the many cooperatives that support local makers.
