Palmerston North or ‘Palmy’ as it’s known brims with energy, culture and heritage. Overlooking the Manawatū river, the region boomed with a pastoral farming industry.

A student city with Massey University established in 1927, it’s also home to the popular Te Manawa which includes the New Zealand Rugby Museum, which houses the largest collection of memorabilia in the world.

Around town there are several performing arts venues including Centrepoint Theatre which is celebrating its 50th year. It’s the only professional theatre outside the four main centres in Aotearoa.

In and around Palmerston North are culturally significant sites including Te Marae o Hine - The Courtyard of the Daughter of Peace, which lies at the heart of the city.

Te Manawa curator Sian Van Dyk joins Culture 101 to discuss the latest exhibitions and the hidden gems around the city.
