The rural town of Greytown in the Wairarapa in the lower North Island is particularly proud of its heritage and history.

The main street is lined with Victorian architecture; the buildings are home to boutiques, antique stores and cafes. Greytown claims to have the most complete street of Victorian design in New Zealand and was the first planned inland town.

In 2017, it was awarded the title of the country’s ‘most beautiful small town’.

The regional history museum Cobblestones Museum has six Historic Places Trust category 2 buildings. Right next door is Schoc Chocolates - an artisan chocolate studio in a cute cottage.

The Greytown Memorial Park is planted with 177 lime trees, planted in 1922 to commemorate the 177 soldiers from the community who died in World War One.

Greytown is also home to plenty of artists. Linda Kirkland is an emerging artist and part of the Te Hupenui art collective and joins Culture 101 for this week’s regional wrap.
