Much loved musician and Whanganui resident Anthonie Tonnon joins Culture 101’s Whanganui show as our Fast Favourites guest. A singer-songwriter, Tonnon won the prestigious Taite Music Prize in 2022 for his independently released album Leave Love Out of This.
A fervent advocate for public transport (he represents Whanganui District Council on the Horizons passenger transport committee) Tonnon operates the historic Durie Hill Elevator. Aotearoa’s only underground elevator, it’s 105-years-old and ascends more than 60 metres from a tunnel over 200 metres into Durie Hill on the south bank of the river.
For his cultural picks in Whanganui, Tonnon recommends The Chronicle Buildings, Article Cafe and the Whanganui River Markets every Saturday. For those after a cocktail, Tonnon has Teal Lounge on his list, tucked away on Drews Avenue with dim lighting and cushioned booths. For his music choice, it’s local drums and electronics duo, Bird Party.
