Special votes counted in NZ, implications significant for some

From First Up, 5:53 am on 6 November 2020

In light of the blistering US election campaign, you could be forgiven for forgetting there are Still undecided seats in New Zealand's Parliament after our election less than three weeks ago. Later today the results of an estimated 480-thousand special ballots are due to be released, about 17 per cent of the country's total vote. These include votes not on the printed electoral role, overseas votes, and ballots cast from an electorate they're not enrolled in... the implications could be significant: The Maori Party's return to Parliament hinges on the 415 vote lead that Rawiri Waititi has over the incumbent Tamati Coffey in Waiariki. And the Whangarei seat remains in the balance, with National's Shane Reti leading Labour's Emily Henderson by a mere 162 votes. There are a six other electorates that were won on election night by fewer than 1000 votes and of course a number of list MPs who may lose or gain with the specials. Joining Nathan Rarere to talk through all the possibilities is Victoria University Political lecturer Bryce Edwards.
