US indigenous communities learn from Whanganui iwi about awa
A short documentary called From the Mountains to the Sea recently premiered at the Native American Film Festival The film follows Tribal groups from Arizona as they travel to New Zealand to learn from Whanganui iwi who achieved a landmark legal recognition for the Whanganui River Nathan Rarere spoke with Turama Hawira, one of two Te Pou Tupua, a human representative of Te Awa o Whanganui. And Aleena Kawe, the founder of Red Star International, an organisation that has fostered the relationship between Indigenous communities in the US and Aotearoa. Nathan asked her to explain who came here and the state of the rivers they're concerned with.
