Northland business desperate for tourists this Easter

From First Up, 5:38 am on 6 April 2023

Businesses in Northland say this Easter Weekend could be make or break for them, after a run of disasterous weather that kept visitors at bay over summer. Cyclone Hale battered the North in early January, causing recurring slips on State Highway 1 at the Brynderwyns, and when Cyclone Gabrielle closed more roads a little over a month later, Northland become extremely isolated. Mercifully, the highway north will be open for the long weekend, but then it's due to close again for two weeks from the 17th for further repairs. Our reporter Leonard Powell tied one of our snazzy First Up air fresheners to the rearview mirror of the RNZ RAV and headed Up North to see how folks are getting on.
