Deep Funk, a subgenre of Funk, traces its roots back to the United States in the 1960s. What generally seperates it from Funk, is its emphasis on groove and improvisation, and musicianship is generally considered more of a primary focus than the more traditional songwriting found in Funk.
As always when we're discussing genre, we have a very special guest expert, and it doesn't get more special than todays guest. Joining Mark and Kara out of our Wellington Studio is Scott Towers, aka Chopper Reed, from Fat Freddy's Drop.
He's breaking down the origins of Deep Funk, the deep history behind the subgenre, and his own personal experience in Deep Funk, all whilst providing some excellent musical examples for you to enjoy.
