Mahuru Māori, the month long kaupapa aiming to normalise te reo in everyday situations is back for 2023. Mahuru Māori challenges participants to consciously use as much te reo Māori as they can during Mahuru, which this year runs from September 15th to October 14th. Regardless of whom people speak to, where and when they are speaking participants should speak only in te reo Māori. Māpuna speaks with one of the leaders of the initiative Lyndsay Te Puaheiri Snowden.

In this special interview entirely in te reo Māori, Māpuna is in Kaitaia at the home of one of the acknowledged kaumātua of the Far North, Graeme Neho. Matua Kerema Neho regales us with some of the history of his iwi Ngāti Kuri, like the origin of the name Kapowairua or the name of Te Hāpua. He also speaks of the ongoing development to recall and store the history and traditions of the people of Ngāti Kuri.
