3pm - Classic Concert: Isle of Wight Festival - 1970
Promoter Ron Foulk summed up the festival with "It began as a beautiful dream but it got out of control and became a monster." The third Isle of Wight Festival in August 1970 was significant for three reasons - with an attendance of over 500,000 it was the largest rock festival ever to date; it was the last performances of headliners Jimi Hendrix (within a month he would be dead) and doors singer Jim Morrison (dead within a year) and it was the end of the 60's hippie festival ethos. There were riots at the gates as the hippies and anarchists demanded to be let in for free. You can hear the tension cracking in the air alongside performances by The Who, The Doors, Jethro Tull, Free, Hendrix and others. (Sony)
