Maori Development Minister on co-governance

From Midday Report, 12:12 pm on 26 April 2022

The Government will consider a report saying a proposed law to introduce Maori seats on the Rotorua council is discriminatory - but is determined to get it right and go back to square one.

The Rotorua District Council Representation Arrangements Bill would allow the wards to have three seats each, plus four "at-large" seats.

Rotorua mayor Steve Chadwick is standing by the bill.

A report by the Attorney General found it limits the right to be free from discrimination and cannot be justified.

Māni Dunlop spoke to Māori Development Minister, Willie Jackson, about what he described as a controversial process.
