Corrections admits 'pervasive' violence in Whanganui prison
The Department of Corrections readily admits inmate and gang violence at Whanganui Prison is pervasive but it says it's doing everything it can to change the culture. The Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier's report - released on Tuesday - highlights increasing violence among inmates and parts of the prison under gang control. It follows an unannounced visit to the prison in February and the report that followed paints a worrying portrait of what goes on behind bars. Eva Corlett reports.
