Auckland City Rail Link cost goes up another $1b
The cost of building Auckland's City Rail Link has blown out by $1 billion to a total cost of $4.4 billion. The price hike is being pinned on a number of factors. These include accommodating longer, nine-car trains, higher construction costs, and higher margins for contingency and escalation costs. Auckland City and the government would split the bill 50/50 if it's approved. The Mayor of Auckland is Phil Goff tells Guyon Espiner he has a plan for Auckland Council to source another $500 million without raising rates further.
