Maori welcome Budget 2019, urge more autonomy
A leader in Maori health says the new Budget sparks hope for Maori but warns they need to let Maori lead any changes. Yesterday's Budget announcement included 80 million dollars on Whanau Ora, and dedicated funding for te reo Maori, media, education and marae. The chief executive of Te Rau Ora, Maria Baker, says she's also stoked with the multi-billion dollar investment in Mental Health and Addiction, and Child Poverty. But she told RNZ Maori news correspondent Leigh-Marama McLachlan that Maori need to be in charge of their outcomes across the board.
