Auckland tornado: 'Neighbour's roof was splattered all over our place'

From Morning Report, 7:10 am on 12 August 2019

Residents of Ashby Avenue in St Heliers will be assessing the damage as daylight arrives.

A violent tornado ripped through the Auckland suburb last night, lifting roofs and bringing down trees.

Fire and Emergency say they have a dozen reports of houses being damaged. The storm also lifted the roof at the Cloud events centre on Auckland's Queens Wharf.

MetService says there were around 2000 lightning strikes in the region on Sunday night - one hit a house in Kumeu, but it's been inspected and deemed safe.

RNZ reporter Matthew Theunissen headed to Ashby Ave and asked Craig Hawkins what happened.
