A Syrian refugee who was privately sponsored to live in Canada now wants to extend the same offer to 200 refugees detained on Nauru and Manus Island.

In Canada, refugees can be sponsored by individuals or community groups who can commit to pay for their resettlement - the equivalent of about NZD$20,000.

Hassan Al Kontar spent six months living in limbo in Kuala Lumpur International Airport - unable to return to war-torn Syria, but unable to find a country that would resettle him - before a group in Canada sponsored him.

He spoke to Susie Ferguson about his plan to help others.
