Low turnout for census has failed Maori - expert
A Maori data specialist says Stats NZ has failed in its treaty obligations and have left Maori no way of knowing whether things are getting better or worse for them. Stats NZ has had to use data from other places to fill the gaps caused by an extremely low Maori turnout for for Census 2018 --just 68 percent completed the survey. Andrew Sporle runs a statistics consultancy and lectures at Auckland University and told Meriana Johnsen the poor turnout means all data before 2017 is unuseable - leaving Maori without any idea whether government investment is making a difference.
