Wellington's civic leaders want to stoke the city's sense of pride, by reviving items such as its bespoke but curious looking flag.
The flag features a flying dolphin, a galleon ship, and English flags on top of a black and gold background.
Kim Hill spoke to designer and vexillologist - that's a person who studies flags - Thomas Le Bas, who said the flag isn't much different from Wellington's Coat of Arms.
"I believe that's kind of where the few symbols kind of originate from, so we've got this dolphin, which might not necessarily look like a dolphin, we currently have that on the Coat of Arms and we also have a number of galleys.
"So what they've done is just piecing together into what's called a badge and essentially putting that on a flag."
Mr Le Bas said the flag may have seemed appropriate when it was designed but he doesn’t believe it fits in with modern Wellington.
"I feel like it's from a bygone era. It's from a time where perhaps the UK-centric kind of New Zealand mindset was probably more appropriate.
"But now I think we've moved on from that. I don't think it resonates with people anymore."
