Southland's Tiwai Point aluminium smelter looks set to close after Rio Tinto announced plans to wind down operations yesterday.
The smelter employs 1000 people and uses 13 percent of the country's electricity.
Contact Energy's chief executive Mike Fuge wants Rio Tinto to reconsider.
