Student representatives say they're deeply disappointed the Labour Party will not extend its fees-free plan for second and third-year tertiary students if returned to government.
Labour's campaign policy in 2017 was to introduce fees-free at the start of 2018, then gradually extend it to two years' free in 2021 and provide three years' free in 2024.
But it has now abandoned plans to extend the policy beyond the first year.
New Zealand Union of Students national president Isabella Lenihan-Ikin says the scheme was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create a publicly funded education system at the tertiary level.
