Greenhithe pub closed after visit from Covid-19 case

From Morning Report, 7:17 am on 22 October 2020

Hundreds of Aucklanders who were at a packed North Shore pub on Friday night are being told to stay home, and get a Covid-19 test as soon as possible.

Health officials are urging anyone who was at "The Malt" on Friday night to stay in isolation until they receive a negative result.

Owner Kevin McVicar says he got a call from health authorities last night around 6.30pm and initially thought it was a hoax. He closed the pub immediately after confirming it was not fake and says customers were very understanding.

He says Friday night was "very busy " and he has no idea who the infected person was or where they sat.

Of the eight staff three are isolating and getting tested because they were working that night.

McVicar is also "a bit worried" about the crowds from Sunday when the rugby test was playing and the pub was packed again.
