Plans to permanently introduce an insurance payout for people who lose their job could cost as much as $5 billion a year.
Using ACC as a possible template, the government is considering an unemployment insurance scheme to support people who undeservedly find themselves out of work.
But Ministry of Social Development documents, released to RNZ under the Official Information Act, warn it won't be easy to implement and it won't come cheap.
