More Aucklanders are dying or being maimed on the roads because police are doing only half what they said they would to tackle speeding and booze.
The police themselves accept the criticism contained in a scathing report that calls the inaction a 'tragic failure'
Phil Pennington reports
The police first agreed to an interview with RNZ then withdrew saying the Superintendent of Road Policing for Tāmaki Makaurau was too busy
In a statement they agreed they have significantly undershot their breath testing and speed enforcement targets.
They say they are working hard to do better
Yet soon they will have still more to do - when next year they begin drug driving tests, with a target of 30,000 nationally a year.
Transport Agency Waka Kotahi declined an interview
It says it has communicated its expectations to police around delivering on the targets
Both the police and NZTA issued lengthy statements but would not speak to them
The Ministry of Transport says it is reviewing road safety investment, focusing on infrastructure and road policing.
