Covid-19: Restaurants rushing to work out how to manage vaccine passes

From Morning Report, 6:08 am on 18 November 2021

Restaurateurs say they're still in the dark about how they're supposed to check vaccine passports.

The government's "My Vaccine Pass" certificates will soon become your docket to dining out when the country moves to the traffic light system.

At the red and orange levels only people who are vaccinated will be allowed into restaurants to dine in, if a business is not requiring them customers will have to be served contactlessly.

Hospitality businesses say they're in the dark about what kind of technology will be available to check the passes, and they aren't expecting it until 22 November, a week before the system begins.

Restaurant Association Auckland president and restaurant owner Krishna Botica told Morning Report some of her restaurants will be bringing in doormen to check the passes.

She said the timeframe for bringing in the app won't give much opportunity for businesses to get up to speed though.

"We've got our training set up for our staff, to communicate all these things but, as I say, it's going to be right down to the wire at this point, which is very unfortunate."

Despite all the trouble Botica said venues are very excited to open up to customers after months of takeaways only.

"We can't wait to get open. However, we want the Christmas rush to be a very positive experience for our customers and our staff, and just having limited timeframes is really just adding to that stress."
