Transport agency Waka Kotahi says heavy rain forecast for the West Coast is expected to make roads dangerous and some could become impassible due to slips and flooding. It's warning motorists not to go out.
MetService has issued a red warning for heavy rain on Westland and Buller districts through until Thursday - and an orange warning for many of the surrounding districts.
A Strong Wind Watch has also been issued for the Canterbury High Country.
