Waitangi Tribunal claim filed over Maori education

From Morning Report, 8:36 am on 8 February 2022

Te Rūnanga Nui o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori have filed an urgent claim over the state of Māori education to the Waitangi Tribunal.

The claim is on behalf of all 63 kura and the whānau of 6500 students nationwide, and has to do with what the claimant says have been Treaty-related omissions by the Crown over the years in education.

At issue is whether the establishment of a separate Māori Education Authority could better help Māori education providers.

Associate Education Minister Kelvin Davis says the government is doing what it can and will be doing more, while the Ministry of Education has opposed the move.

Te Rūnanga Nui o Ngā Kura Kaupapa Māori co-chair Rawiri Wright spoke to Corin Dann.
