Massive ecosanctuary could come to Lower Hutt

From Morning Report, 8:51 am on 4 April 2022

A proposal for a massive ecosanctuary in Lower Hutt has taken a step forward.

The Greater Wellington Regional Council, iwi, and the Department of Conservation all back the idea to build 29 kilometres of predator fencing in native bush in the hills east of Wainuiomata.

It could be a home for kākāpō and other endangered birds.

A feasibility study shows it could take about a decade to build and cost about $42 million dollars.

Now the question is - will the Government fund it?

Greater Wellington Regional Councillor Thomas Nash spoke to Susie Ferguson.
