Government proposes change to Māori roll

From Morning Report, 8:16 am on 10 June 2022

The Government is proposing to change electoral law to allow Māori voters to switch between the general roll and the Māori roll to any time.

At the moment, Māori voters can only switch every five years.

The proposal will need a 75 percent vote in Parliament to become law, but the National Party says it will not support the change as written.

National's justice spokesperson Paul Goldsmith says the change could allow the system to be gamed.
