National says no to light rail in Wellington

The National Party says the government's plan to overhaul Wellington's transport system won't get the city moving.

The revamp of the city's infrastructure would have light rail built across town, an extra tunnel through Mt Victoria, and roads rearranged around the Basin Reserve.

A business case on the project - costing to the tune of $7.4 billion - is expected by 2024, with construction to begin four years after that.

National's transport spokesperson Simeon Brown spoke to Morning Report.
