Grey Lynn family huddled in basement as shooting happened

From Morning Report, 7:18 am on 19 July 2022

The neighbour of a man shot and critically injured by police in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn last night says he and his family huddled in the basement until the shooting stopped.

Armed police swarmed Wallingford Street shortly after 5pm on Monday after reports a man in an agitated state was standing on the street with a gun.

Police Superintendent Karyn Malthus said the 32-year-old had been firing at his own house, although there was no-one inside.

Malthus said there will be an increased police presence in Grey Lynn today as officers investigate what happened.

Waitemata Local Board member Graeme Gunthorp lives next door and called the police after hearing the gun fire.

He spoke to Kim Hill.
