Minister responds to criticism of street design legislation

The government wants to pave the way for councils to redesign our streets - saying proposed legislation will make roads safer, more accessible and environmentally friendly.

However, the National Party says the legislation introduced to parliament yesterday would allow councils to circumvent public consultation and pilot changes to streets for up to two years.

It is urging the proposed changes be rejected via public submissions.

Transport Minister Michael Wood spoke to Corin Dann.
