A large fire is still burning in a scrap metal yard in the Garlands Road area of Woolston in Christchurch.
Reports of cars on fire came in about eight o'clock last night with smoke billowing across the city. Fifteen firetrucks and more than 50 firefighters were called to battle the blaze.
A public health warning was issued last night with people affected by the smoke told to close their windows and doors and not go outside.
Officer in charge at the fire Dave Key spoke to Corin Dann.
