The Nurses Organisation, is calling on its 35,000 members who work in hospitals to turn down requests to work extra shifts next week because of a dispute over how they are compensated for them.

The Association of Salaried Medical Specialists executive director Sarah Dalton says senior doctors back the nurses, although many services will take a hit and she expects significant disruption.

Dalton spoke to health correspondent Rowan Quinn.

Te Whatu Ora declined to speak on Morning Report today. It's chief executive Margie Apa told a virtual hui for health stakeholders yesterday she's disappointed the union is encouraging the action.
