Firefighters agree to use blacklisted truck again

From Morning Report, 8:56 am on 6 October 2022

Firefighters have lifted a ban on a big fire truck that keeps breaking down.

The last time there were problems was when it was attending a house fire.

The sorry saga of the Newtown aerial truck has exposed basic holes in the way the country's emergency responder fleet is run.

The truck's been blacklisted since freezing up with a firefighter in the ladder cage at a raging house blaze in Wellington in February.

One of three investigators into the failure, the union's Joe Stanley, told reporter Phil Pennington the truck is the 'canary in the mine'.

Stanley, a vice president of the professional firefighters union, was reinstated to the aerial investigation after Morning Report interviewed him back in May.

FENZ told RNZ  it has accepted all seven of the investigators' recommendations from what it calls 'a very good and useful report'.
