Nurses at North Shore Hospital's emergency department say their colleagues are sometimes under so much stress they can't finish their shifts.
The department is the subject of a health and safety complaint by staff frustrated at the impact of overcrowding.
Last week a patient was punched in the face and knocked to the ground when she stepped in to defend a nurse being verbally abused.
