Justice Minister on legislation proposing lowering voting age to 16

From Morning Report, 7:17 am on 22 November 2022

The country could be one step closer towards giving 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote.

Draft legislation's being drawn up for MPs to debate whether 16-year-olds can go to the ballot box.

The Supreme Court found no good reason to keep the voting age of 18, which it declared to be inconsistent with the Bill of Rights Act.

Any change would require the backing of three-quarters of Parliament or a majority vote in a referendum, and won't take effect for the 2023 election.

Justice Minister Kiri Allan spoke to Corin Dann.
