The impending merger of RNZ and TVNZ is no more, with the government scrapping the plan yesterday as it refocuses on the cost of living.
Last year's Budget had allocated $109m a year to the new entity, through to 2026, and it's understood more than $16m had already been spent to set up the new entity.
A new public media organisation was originally billed as essential, with consultants telling the government "the status quo is not an option".
