The Carterton District Council is flying its flag at half mast today in honour of its former mayor Georgina Beyer who died yesterday.
Her election as Mayor in 1995 and then later as an MP, attracted worldwide attention.
For her politics was an obvious choice after working as a stripper, sex worker, drag queen star and actor.
But it didn't come without its challenges.
Annie Goldson is a documentary maker whose works include Georgie Girl, a doco she co-directed 22 years ago on the late MP and rural mayor.
